Hockey

Hockey or Field hockey as it is known is a stick and ball game with origins dating back thousands of years. There are two teams of eleven players and using their sticks to hit, push and dribble a small hard ball, usually white but coloured balls are also used. Hockey is the only game that you cannot play left handed! There is a great degree of skill required and stick handling is a skill that must be made to play the game. Scoring a goal is very interesting. There are only certain ways it can be done, from a Field goal, a Penalty corner and a Penalty stroke. Nowadays field hockey is usually played on plastic pitches with only the odd social game played on grass. The regulation length of a match is two halves of 35 minutes. In championship matches there must be a winner so the game can go into extra time or even to a penalty stroke competition.

The equipment required for the players other than the goalkeeper are shin pads, a mouth guard and a stick. The goalkeeper has specialised protective equipment, from leg guards, kickers, body armour and a helmet.
